Outlander is Diana Gabaldon's series about Claire Randall, a former World War II nurse who is carried back from 1945 to 1743 Scotland. It mixes historical fiction, romance and adventure, and the books are long: most run well past 800 pages.
Nine main novels have been published. Gabaldon has said a tenth will be the last main novel; it had not been published as of October 2026. The books include explicit sex and scenes of sexual violence.

Best Reading Order
Read the nine main novels in publication order; each one picks up where the last left off, so there is no debate about order for the main series.
Gabaldon has also written spin-off novels and novellas, including the Lord John Grey books, which overlap with the main timeline. They are optional extras. Most readers finish at least the first few main novels before trying them.
