Millie, out of prison on parole and living in her car, takes a live-in housekeeping job with the wealthy Winchester family on Long Island. Her employer, Nina, is erratic and cruel, her attic bedroom locks from the outside, and Nina's husband, Andrew, seems far too kind. Millie needs the job too badly to walk away.

Jim's Review

🐛
Pure popcorn thriller, and proud of it. McFadden writes short, punchy chapters that end on hooks, and the setup — a desperate housekeeper, a nightmare boss, a locked attic room — practically dares you to guess what is really going on. The twist lands hard and changes how the whole first half reads. Subtle it is not. Content note: domestic abuse. Four worms — a guilty-pleasure page-turner with teeth.
