by Barbara Tuchman

5/5
Presidio Press 544 pages August 3, 2004

Barbara Tuchman's Pulitzer Prize-winning account of the first month of World War I, showing how a cascade of miscalculations, hubris, and rigid military planning turned a regional crisis into a global catastrophe. A masterclass in narrative history that reads like a tragedy.

Jim's Review

🐛
Tuchman proves that the scariest thing about World War I is how avoidable it was — and how nobody managed to avoid it. The first chapter alone, describing the funeral of Edward VII, is one of the finest pieces of historical writing Jim has ever read. Every general thinks they're the smartest person in the room, and Tuchman shows exactly how that arrogance led to millions of deaths. Five worms — devastating and brilliantly written.
