Interview with the Vampire
by Anne Rice
4/5
Ballantine Books 342 pages May 12, 1976
In a darkened room, the vampire Louis tells his epic story to a young reporter — from his transformation by the seductive Lestat in 18th century Louisiana, to their creation of a child vampire, Claudia. Rice reinvented the vampire as a romantic, tortured figure and launched a literary empire.

Jim's Review
🐛
Rice took the vampire genre and made it lush, sensual, and deeply melancholy. Louis is the most existentially tortured creature Jim has ever related to — and Jim is literally a worm. The New Orleans atmosphere drips off every page, and little Claudia is equal parts heartbreaking and terrifying. If Dracula is the granddaddy of vampire fiction, this is the cool goth kid who made vampires fashionable again.
