A mother and her two children make a desperate journey downriver blindfolded, because to see the mysterious entities that have driven most of humanity to violent madness means death. Told in dual timelines, this apocalyptic horror novel builds unbearable tension through sensory deprivation.

Jim's Review

🐛
Reading a book about creatures you can't look at is a brilliant flex for the horror genre, and Malerman nails the execution. Jim was gripping the pages so tightly he almost got a paper cut — which for a worm is basically a mortal wound. The tension during the river journey is suffocating, and the dual timeline structure keeps you guessing. Proof that what you can't see is always scarier than what you can.
