American Gods
by Neil Gaiman
4/5
William Morrow Paperbacks 541 pages June 19, 2001
Shadow Moon, recently released from prison, is hired as a bodyguard by the mysterious Mr. Wednesday — who turns out to be an old god preparing for war. Across the American landscape, the gods that immigrants brought to the New World are losing power to modern deities of technology, media, and consumerism.

Jim's Review
🐛
Gaiman took every mythology Jim ever loved and dumped it into the American Midwest, and somehow it all works brilliantly. Shadow Moon is the quiet, stoic center of a hurricane of ancient gods, roadside attractions, and existential dread. The "Coming to America" interludes are tiny masterpieces on their own. It's weird, it's sprawling, and it burrows under your skin in ways you don't expect. Four worms — a modern mythology for the modern age.
